Abstract
The penetration of optical fiber into the subscriber loop is a critical step in extending the emerging "information super-highway" to the home. Recent changes in the technological, regulatory, and business climates are expected to accelerate the introduction of fiber access systems into the telephone company residential plant. These changes include the rapid development of digital video compression techniques, the FCC ruling allowing video dial tone services, and the prospect of widespread competition for both voice and video in the residential arena.
