Abstract
In the effort to create enhanced fiber-optic systems, NTT has progressed from laboratory trials to field trials. The 1980 Yokosuka laboratory trial was the first full-scale trial to verify the performance of the point-to-point architecture and multimode fiber. It followed the Kichijoji field trial, the INS model experiment and the Mitaka field trial, all of which took place around 1985, and the Marunouchi field trial in 1987. Fiber-optic commercial systems were developed a few years after these trials. They include the Super Digital System (6.3 Mbit/s) for high-speed digital leased circuits, CT-RT systems (at data rates as high as Mbit/s) as digital loop carrier, and the INS-Net 1500 system (ISDN, 1.5 Mbit/s).1
