Abstract
Passively mode-locked fiber lasers have been a subject of great attention because of their potential as sources of ultrashort transform-limited pulses. The figure-8 laser has produced pulses as short as 98 fs (close to being transform limited).1 However, mode-locking instability has been a subject of great concern.2,3 We now understand the origin of the mode-locking instability of the figure-8 laser, and with proper design we have stabilized its performance.
