Thermal and photo-initiated reactions of H2 with germanosilicate optical fibers

Abstract

Photosensitivity in optical fibers is a subject of current interest because of recent device applications based on refractive-index modification of doped silicate glasses. Over the past few years, various techniques for achieving index modulation with UV irradiation have been demonstrated. Of recent interest, how-ever, are various material treatments that have the ability of enhancing the UV sensitivity of glass. One of these treatments involves loading of the glass with molecular hydrogen before U V irradiation.l Kesultant index changes of 100 times those normally obtainable in unloaded germanosilicate glass have been demonstrated.
