Multigigabit-per-second standard-fiber transmission by injection-locked directly modulated lasers

Abstract

Intensity modulation of semiconductor lasers, together with transmission over standard monomode fibers and direct detection, is a commonly used and cost-effective method for optical communications at high bit rates. The transmission distance at a 1550-nm wavelength can exceed 50 to 80 km at 10 Gbit/s if chirp-free laser transmitters are used.1
