Abstract

Since March 1993, a consortium consisting of AT&T Bell Laboratories, Digital Equipment Corp., and MIT Lincoln Laboratory has been conducting research under a grant from the Advanced Research Projects Agency to design an all-optical or transparent optical network architecture that might one day provide high-bit-rate services to many users distributed over local, regional, and wide areas.
