Abstract

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are attractive for optical-communication and interconnect applications. Previously, we demonstrated, using 0.85-μm gain-guided GaAs/ AlGaAs quantum-well VCSELs, a 90% butt-coupling efficiency to single-mode fibers1 and a self-aligned fiber-pigtailed packaging technique that made use of silicon submounts.2 The usefulness of these lasers is ultimately determined by the laser lifetime.
