Abstract
There is a great need for development of a route-reconnection switch in order to realize a high-performance optical subscriber network. This switch should be bistable, polarization and wavelength independent, and compact. I propose an electrocapillarity optical (ECO) switch, which has the potential for use in bistable waveguide matrix switches suitable for route reconnection in an optical subscriber network. The ECO switch has a micromirror formed by a mercury droplet immersed in electrolyte and driven by electrocapillarity. The original concept of this switch is the continuous electrowetting (CEW) optical switch reported by Beni et al. in 1982.1,2
