Abstract

As one of the most important issues in intensity-modulation/ direct-detection (IM/DD) systems, the dispersion limit has been widely investigated with differing results.1–4 In this paper we derive an improved formula of B2L, where B is the bit rate and L is the regeneration distance, for arbitrary normalized pulse width P and eye-opening penalty X. By comparison with published results on theoretical analyses, computer simulations, and experimental data, its correctness and the constraints of other results are shown.
