Abstract

During the past few years, self-phase modulation (SPM) has been recognized as an important impairment in multigigabit fiber-optical systems. There is a long list of theoretical investigations on the effects of SPM,1,2 and recently, first experiments were reported.3 In this paper, for the first time to our knowledge, SPM measurements over standard fiber at 10 Gbit/s are matched with simulation results. The theoretical model used for the simulation of a Mach-Zehnder modulator provides amplitude and relative phase of the transmitted signal.4 By solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the field envelope along the fiber can be traced. The receiver is modeled by a PIN detector followed by a low-pass filter.
