Polymers for optical interconnects

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Passive optical-interconnect components, connectors, and circuitry are critical for the successful deployment of optical-fiber-based telecom and datacom information highway applications. They are essential for distributing and coupling optically transmitted data signals and for providing interfaces to optical fibers, photodiode light sources, and detectors. In response to the market need for low-cost, reliable optical-interconnect circuitry, polymeric passive optical components and circuits are receiving increased interest worldwide. As a result, technology advances in polymer materials, processes, and optical interconnectability continue to be realized, along with the potential for low-cost manufacturability, reliable performance, and versatile application.
