Abstract

Ultrahigh-speed time-division-multiplexed (TDM) optical transmission is a key to constructing the next generation of optical transmission systems. We have previously reported a 100-Gbit/s 200-km optical transmission experiment using transform-limited (TL) optical pulses.1 This report describes the successful demonstration of 100-Gbit/s 500-km optical transmission. By optimizing the signal wavelength, the power penalty after a 200-km transmission was reduced from 1 to 0.2 dB, and the power penalty after a 500-km transmission was only 1.6 dB.
