Abstract
A number of future system applications, such as photonic switching fabrics1 and transparent optical crossconnects,2 will combine wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) and spaces-witching techniques. To avoid coherent cross talk, space switches with high isolation will be required in multichannel operation. Such space switches can be built by using semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) as gates in a perfect-shuffle fiber interconnection network with the additional advantage of compensating for splitting losses. In addition, clamped- gain SOAs can overcome some of the limitations of conventional SOAs, especially interchannel cross talk induced by cross saturation under WDM operation.
