Abstract
Polarization controllers and scramblers can substantially increase the transmission capacity in high-speed fiber-optic communication systems by reducing undesired polarization effects and through polarization multiplexing. In this paper we review the operation of these polarization modulators and their applications in high-speed lightwave systems.
