Demonstration of SONET transport over a time-slotted FDM all-optical network

Abstract

The network test bed under development by the Consortium on Wideband All-Optical Networks formed by MIT, DEC, and AT&T1 uses both frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) and time slotting of channels to serve diverse user communities. This approach has the potential for greater network efficiency, scalability, and flexibility in resource allocation than either FDM or time slotting provides alone. Emerging all-optical networks (AONs) must interface to the existing network infrastructure,2 especially those carrying SONET, FDDI, and ATM traffic. This paper demonstrates operation of a timeslotted FDM B-service constructed for our AON test bed, with OC-3 compatibility, and connectivity to conventional networks.
