Abstract
Video systems, or more generically visual communications systems, are the subject of intense focus world wide as the application driver for next generation access and distribution networks. The marketplace demand for systems that simultaneously enable cost effective delivery of traditionally "free" television services and enable two way private visual communications (a.k.a. videophone) has stimulated the development and deployment of several new architectures. Both wireline and wireless systems compete in this new market, with the wireline alternatives clearly dependent on existing and emerging fiber optic technologies.
