Abstract
As the need for longer and longer unrepeatered transmission distances increases, advanced transmission schemes are required. Recently, the use of remotely pumped erbium-doped fiber preamplifiers has been demonstrated, increasing the transmission distance by more than 50 km.1,2 Significant gain is also obtained from the nonlinear stimulated-Raman-scattering (SRS) process occurring in the transmission fiber itself when high optical pump power levels are launched towards the remote amplifier.
