OTDR monitoring systems for optical transmission lines: induced perturbations and possible remedies

Abstract

The increasing interest in the use of optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDR), operating in the 1.6–1.65-μm region, for on-line monitoring of installed optical communication systems poses the problem of the possible disturbance that the monitoring system can induce on the transmitted signal. The present-generation of 1.6-μm OTDR operates with pulses of approximately 10–20-mW peak power, and no BER penalty has been noticed.1 However, considerable effort is being aimed at increasing (by means of Raman2 or Er-doped fiber3 amplifiers) the pulse peak power to 100 mW to 1 W in order to increase the dynamic range of the OTDR.
