Abstract

Penetration of fiber deep into the local loop depends on the commercial availability of low-cost, high-performance laser transmitters. The major cost of producing a pigtailed laser is the active align/fix of the fiber to the laser to submicrometer accuracy. Developments in lasers have relaxed the fiber-alignment tolerances and have presented opportunities for novel packaging techniques leading toward reduced costs.
