Abstract

The erbium-doped optical fiber amplifier is expected to play an important role in promoting optical telecommunication systems. The commercial deployment of optical amplifiers requires (a) high power (over 90 mW), (b) high case temperature Tc (up to 70°C), and (c) high reliability [mean time to failure (MTTF) over 5 × 105 h] for the pump-laser modules. We have successfully developed 1480-nm pump-laser modules to meet the above three requirements, and the modules have achieved high-Tc operation at up to 85°C and an MTTF of 1.02 × 106 h.
