Clipping reduction for improvement of analog and digital performance beyond clipping limit in lightwave CATV systems

Abstract

We demonstrate the clipping reduction (CR) concept for lightwave CATV transport system that enhances the CNR while reducing clipping distortion for all AM channels. Simultaneously, the CR also improves the clipping induced bit error rate for hybrid analog-digital channel loading. Using the CR on a system loaded with 80 NTSC channel, the CNR is improved beyond the clipping limit yet retaining low distortion. For the 64-QAM digital channel, this new concept significantly reduces the clipping induced bit error rate and decrease the required signal to noise ratio at bit error rate of 10−9.
