Abstract

Optical wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) technology is attractive in terms of upgrading transmission capacity, wavelength-routing and network scalability through wavelength reuse. The capacity-distance product in WDM systems is limited by the gain bandwidth of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and nonlinear interactions in fibers. Some dispersion-managed fiber configurations [1][2] have already been proposed to reduce the interaction due to four-wave mixing (FWM). In this paper, we present a novel dispersion-managed fiber that effectively suppresses fiber nonlinearities such as FWM and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS).
