Dispersion-compensating fiber: is there merit in the figure of merit?

Abstract

Long-distance amplified lightwave systems operating at high capacities require high launched powers. If such systems operate over conventional single-mode fiber they also require dispersion compensation.1 The conventional figure of merit for dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) (ps/nm/dB) considers only dispersion and loss, however the small effective areas of most DCFs make it impossible to ignore optical nonlinearities when evaluating their applicability for such systems.
