Abstract

Multimedia communications services in the upcoming era will be provided through an optical transport network that offers large bandwidth at an affordable price.1,2 The optical path cross-connect (OPXC) system is one key to achieving such a network.1 2 × 2 port cross connection was experimentally confirmed using a partly implemented 16 × 16 port OPXC system with 320 Gbit/s throughput (100-km transmission distance).2 However, the eight channels were carried by non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF), whose zero-dispersion wavelength was intentionally made different from the signal window, so equal channel spacing was employed.2 The use of DSF requires unequally spaced channel allocation in order to minimize the transport performance degradation due to four-wave mixing (FWM).3
