Abstract

Large optical switching systems require digital space switches with cross talk below −40 dB. Only fiber switches and cascaded integrated optic switches1 could fulfill this obligation. This work reports on a multiquantum well 1 × 2 space switch, which exhibits a cross talk value below −45 dB, the best performance ever achieved for a single integrated optic switch.
