Clipping limit in externally modulated lightwave CATV systems

Abstract

There is an increasing demand for transmitting high capacity multichannel AM-VSB video over long fiber distances through optical amplifier cascades. However, accumulated system noise degrades video signal quality and, therefore, high optical modulation depth is required to meet system demands. Maintaining high linearity in an externally modulated transmitter is critical while enlarging the optical modulation depth. Severa1 sophisticated linearization schemes have been developed to improve the nonlinearity of Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) external modulators. Even when linearized within its 0-100% intensity transmission width, an external modulator will exhibit limited optical modulation depth due to clipping distortion.
