Abstract
Soliton evolution in an optical fiber is well understood theoretically, but confirming experimental data has been scarce. This is due to the difficulty of continuously observing the spectrum or the pulse width. Either a cutback method must be employed, or a fiber loop constructed that extracts a small fraction of the propagating energy each cycle. Both require physical intervention in the fiber under a test.
