Abstract
We consider circuit and packet-switched all-optical networks using wavelength routing, where the path of a signal through the network is determined by the signal origin and wavelength as well as the network switches and wavelength changers. We discuss wavelength, switching, and transceiver tuning requirements for circuit and packet switched wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) all-optical networks. In addition, we discuss the potential role and benefit of wavelength changers. A variety of different situations are considered.
