Dual-polarization microchip lasers for communications applications

Abstract

The remote operation of optical modulators is desirable in sites where electrical power is not available (such as in some cellular and CATV applications) or desirable (such as in electronic counter-measure techniques). In order to use ordinary singlemode fiber (SMF) instead of the much more costly polarization- maintaining fiber (PMF) between the laser source and the modulator, several techniques for producing a “depolarized" source have been demonstrated. These techniques include the combination of two linearly polarized sources,1 phase modulation of a single source,2 and the use of dual-polarization lasers.3 In this paper, we explore the use of dual-polarization microchip lasers as a depolarized source.
