Abstract

As fiber-to-the-home systems with multiple wavelength signals for video and digital transmission approaches large-scale deployment,1 one critical issue for widespread acceptance is the availability of low-cost wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) components at the subscriber level. Conventional pigtailed optical receiving modules require active alignment of the fiber, lens, and photodiode, thereby driving up production costs. Waveguide devices such as the PLC would also require micron-order alignment of fiber to waveguides.2,3
