Abstract

Field experiments on installed fiber cables are important steps toward the deployment of a transmission system because they show that the system and prototype components under test are sufficiently stable and robust to meet the performance requirements in the adverse field environment. Previously we have demonstrated that 10-Gbit/s line-rate transmission is field deployable on the existing terrestrial long-haul networks employing standard (non-DSF) fibers.’ In this paper we report a successful field demonstration of 10-Gbit/s transmission on the newly installed TPC-5G section undersea cable. Using the same prototype 10-Gbit/s transmitters and receiver/regenerators as the ones used in the previous terrestrial field experiment,1 we have achieved long-term error-free transmission on a 4230-km- long cable with a bit-error-rate (BER) below 10−5. We have also measured a BER as low as 10−11 and 10−5 for 8460 and 12690- km transmission, respectively, in loop-back configurations.
