Abstract

A laser diode with a spot-size converter provides highly efficient coupling to the optical fiber without using lenses and provides a wide alignment tolerance in an optical module assembly.1−4 In addition, low threshold current and high temperature operation have to be achieved for system applications. However, as the design of the spot-size converter region of conventional lasers is strongly related to that of the active region, it is impossible to optimize both regions independently.
