There is currently a great deal of interest in the development of efficient 1.3-μm optical amplifiers because most terrestrial optical fiber communication systems work at this wavelength. Recently it has been shown that lumped and distributed Raman fiber amplifiers are very promising for both analog and digital communication systems.1
