Abstract
The rapid increase in bandwidth demand is driving systems toward utilizing more of the fiber’s roughly 50 THz optical bandwidth. This paper explores fiber issues and system opportunities for using wavelengths outside the traditional 1310 and 1550 nm windows, including the L-band, the S-band, and, with new “Zero-OH” fibers, the 1400 nm region.
