Measurement of beat length and perturbation length in long single-mode fibers by backscattered signal analysis

Abstract

The main parameter used to characterize polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is the well known differential group delay (DGD). DGD may be considered as the macroscopic effect of PMD and it is an important parameter in optical system design. However, it doesn’t give any hint on PMD origins, as DGD doesn’t describe the properties of the random birefringence affecting the fiber.
