Abstract

A polarization maintaining 1.5 µm amplifier was demonstrated by externally inducing strain birefringence in a nominally non-polarization maintaining double cladding Er/Yb fiber. The 27 dBm amplifier had a 17 dB polarization extinction and was v-groove side-pumped by a broad stripe diode. A linearly polarized broadband source is also demonstrated.
