Abstract

We present a strategy for graceful capacity upgrades in optical ring networks, based on passive wavelength add/drop modules which are frequency-cyclic. The concept is demonstrated by incorporating a frequency-cyclic node in a five-node metro-scale ring, and characterizing the bit-error rates of multiple 2.5 Gb/s data streams.
