In order to cope with the rapidly growing demand for transmission capacity the L-band region (from 1570 to 1600 nm) of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is about to be widely used in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems, together with the C-band region (from 1530 to 1560 nm).1,2 Terabit/s WDM transmission systems have been recently demonstrated, by utilizing both C-band and L-band.3 Low cost EDFAs are under very active developments for use in metro WDM systems and un- cooled 980 nm laser diodes are commercially available for those applications. The low cost EDFAs are developed mainly in the C-band region until now. However, the L-band region is being used in various WDM systems to double the capacity, so low cost L-band EDFAs will be also necessary.
