Abstract

Due to the changing demands in today’s optical fiber market more cost-effective solutions for Erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) are needed. The new environment forces network suppliers to plan more flexible systems for new markets, e.q. uncooled metro applications.1 In addition, high-performance optical networks incorporating a reduced number of components are desired. To realize these new systems with minimal development costs superior active and passive devices based on a reliable and well known technology are favored.
