Deterministic Approach to Pure 2nd Order Polarization Mode Dispersion Compensation

Abstract

A deterministic approach to first and second order PMD compensation is essential in a feed forward PMD compensation scheme.1 After obtaining knowledge of the first and second order PMD in the transmission fiber,2 we need to operate the polarization rotators and the variable delay lines in the compensator appropriately in order to exercise full PMD compensation. In this paper, we describe how to solve for the required individual rotation matrices of the polarization rotators and the required DGD for the variable delay line in a pure 2nd PMD compensator assuming first order PMD has been compensated as shown in Figure 1.
