Abstract
Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) has received significant interest in the past few years because it has been considered a major limitation for high-bit-rate and long-haul optical communications. Although it is possible to correct the PMD in the installed systems by using dynamic PMD compensators, it is still very desirable for fiber manufacturers to develop low PMD fibers for new system installations. Fiber spinning, such as the sinusoidal type of spin profiles, has been proposed to reduce the fiber PMD.1,2
