Abstract

Packaging cost is a significant portion of the laser transmitter cost. In order to reduce the activealignment cost, use of spot-size-converted (SSC) lasers has been intensively investigated.1–3 Because of their small beam divergence, passive alignment is possible without any lenses. The device technology is becoming very mature.
