Abstract
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), which allows a single fiber to carry multiple signals simultaneously, will soon become the core technology for coping with the rapidly increasing demand for bandwidth in the Next Generation Internet. An adverse consequence of boosting network capacity, however, is increasing network vulnerability; a single WDM network failure can significantly reduce its ability to deliver services in large-scale information systems.
