Abstract

The broad bandwidth and low optical noise of distributed Raman amplifier (DRA) makes it more attractive for use in high-capacity, long-haul WDM transmission systems than erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA).1–3 In a WDM signal band at 1.55 µm, the Raman gain peak wavelength in a silica-based fiber is shifted by about 100 nm, or exactly 13.2 THz in frequency from the pump center wavelength.4 The bandwidth available for WDM signals was limited by this shift frequency. With a single Raman amplifier (RA), a bandwidth of 100 nm has been reported.5
