Abstract

Recently, the capacity of lightwave network has been increased significantly by using a large number of high-speed (>10 Gb/s) WDM channels. In these networks, the most important limiting factors would be the polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and group-velocity dispersion (GVD). To overcome these limitations, there have been substantial efforts to develop the technologies for PMD and GVD compensation. However, in dynamically re-configurable WDM networks, PMD and GVD of each channel could be changed frequently. In addition, PMD and GVD are sensitive to ambient temperature.1–2 Thus, it is essential to monitor the PMD and GVD accurately for the efficient compensation. Previously, it has been reported that the signal distortion caused by PMD could be estimated by measuring the half-frequency component of the baseband signal in NRZ format.3 In this paper, for the first time to our knowledge, we propose and demonstrate a simple technique that can monitor the first-order PMD and GVD simultaneously.
