Abstract

Nonlinear impairments, such as Self-Phase Modulation (SPM), Cross-Phase Modulation (XPM) or Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) are a matter of paramount concern in high bit-rate WDM transmissions. Their impact can be mitigated up to a certain point through optimized dispersion management along the transmission link. A trade-off between nonlinear and noise limitations mainly determine the haul of a system.
