Low Noise Avalanche Photodiodes

Abstract

The use of thin, sub-micron avalanching widths in avalanche photodiodes results in much lower excess noise than predicted by conventional models. The higher electric fields associated with these reduced dimensions results in a more deterministic ionization process.
