Bending-induced thermal stress birefringence in single-mode fibers

Abstract

The field deformation in bent fibers causes a non-symmetric field overlap with the thermal fiber stress profile and yields large modal stress birefringence. The latter can fully compensate the well-known bending-induced mechanical stress birefringence.
