Abstract

We reevaluate the intrinsic losses of silica-based optical fibers at 0.095 - 0.130 dB/km at 1.55 µm, and describe the impact of loss reduction in conventional and photonic crystal fibers on wavelength-division-multiplexing transmission systems.
