Abstract
In access networks, the passive optical network (PON), a point-to-multipoint TDMA technology, is one of the cost effective solution to support broadband services. Especially, major attention is directed to broadband PON (B-PON) or Gigabit Ethernet PON (GE-PON) which provides the upstream (1310nm) and downstream (1490nm) bidirectional voice/data traffic, simultaneously carrying video broadcast at 1550nm. The integrated service of voice, data and video is also known as “triple play”. Although ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber (SMF) has been widely employed in these systems so far, the bend insensitive fiber is essential for access networks because of the demands for tight routing and congested installation of the fiber in central office, subscriber equipment and optical cable closure. The low attenuation is also required in order to maintain high carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) throughout the transmission distance.
